No. £48,000 is not a normal mechanic salary, and it is not a visa rule. The official median for full-time vehicle technicians and mechanics is £38,042 a year, the legal minimum for a new overseas hire is £41,700, and the mechanic route only covers Certificates of Sponsorship issued before 31 December 2026. Below are the costs, the pay lines and the take-home sums, so you can see what you would pay and what you could keep.
Last checked against official sources: October 2026.
1. Where £48,000 really sits
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) published its 2026 pay survey on 22 October 2026. For full-time workers in the “vehicle technicians, mechanics and electricians” group, the April 2026 median gross pay is £38,042 a year. It is provisional and includes overtime and bonuses. You can read the data in the ONS pay-by-occupation tables.
One worker in four earns £47,424 or more. That puts £48,000 at about the 76th percentile (my estimate between the published 75th and 80th), roughly 26% above the median. It is a top-quarter pay level, not the middle.
The National Careers Service points the same way. It lists £22,000 to £42,000 for a car mechanic and £26,000 to £55,000 for a heavy vehicle technician. Adverts saying “up to £48,000” often mean basic pay plus overtime or bonus, so ask for the basic pay.
2. The pay lines that matter, in order
Job posts mix up several figures. This table puts them in order.
| Figure | What it is |
|---|---|
| £33,400 | Visa floor for “new entrants” only (for example under 26) |
| £35,500 | Going rate for mechanics, lower than the general floor, so it does not decide |
| £38,042 | ONS full-time median, April 2026 |
| £41,700 | Legal floor for a new overseas hire |
| £48,000 | The headline figure, about the 76th percentile, not a visa rule |
| £50,271 | Salary line for the announced 5-year settlement path |
The legal salary is the higher of the general threshold and the job’s going rate. For a mechanic that is £41,700, which works out at about £21.38 an hour on a 37.5-hour week. The official Skilled Worker visa pages set out these rules.
Two details catch people out. Only guaranteed basic pay counts, and only the first 48 hours a week. A mechanic working 60 hours at £15 an hour is counted at 48 hours: £37,440 a year, below the floor. The floor is not pro-rated for part-time work either. For more, see our piece on salary thresholds for skilled professionals.
3. What you would actually keep each month
These sums use the 2026/27 tax year for a single full-year employee in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. Income tax is 20% above the £12,570 allowance. National Insurance is 8% on pay between £12,570 and £50,270. The official income tax rates apply, and Scotland uses different bands.
| Gross pay | Income tax | National Insurance | Take-home a year | Take-home a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| £38,042 (ONS median) | £5,094 | £2,038 | £30,910 | £2,576 |
| £41,700 (legal floor) | £5,826 | £2,330 | £33,544 | £2,795 |
| £48,000 (headline) | £7,086 | £2,834 | £38,080 | £3,173 |
These figures leave out workplace pension (5% of qualifying earnings for the employee), student loan and union fees, so your payslip will differ. The health surcharge is paid with the visa application, not through payroll.
Rent takes a large share. The ONS put the average UK private rent at £1,406 a month in September 2026, about half of the £2,795 take-home at £41,700. That is an all-tenancy average.
4. How much overtime it takes to reach £48,000
Take a mechanic on a round £38,000 basic salary. Over 2,080 hours a year (40 hours, 52 weeks), that is £18.27 an hour. Overtime at time-and-a-half is £27.40 an hour. The £10,000 gap needs about 365 overtime hours a year, or about 7 extra hours every week.
The survey shows how big that is. Mechanics who get paid overtime have a median of 3 hours a week, and the 75th percentile is 7 hours. So reaching £48,000 through overtime means working like the busiest quarter, if your contract pays overtime at that rate at all.
Visa point: Overtime does not help you meet the visa salary floor. Only guaranteed basic pay counts. £38,000 basic plus overtime does not meet the £41,700 minimum.
5. The cost stack from Nigeria
The employer pays the sponsor licence fee, the Certificate of Sponsorship fee and the Immigration Skills Charge. The worker pays the visa fee and the health surcharge to the government, plus personal costs. The table shows government costs for one mechanic applying from outside the UK, at fees in force on 4 November 2026.
| Item | 3-year certificate | 5-year certificate |
|---|---|---|
| Visa application fee | £819 | £1,618 |
| Health surcharge (£1,035 a year) | £3,105 | £5,175 |
| Total paid to the government | £3,924 | £6,793 |
| Funds to show for 28 days | £1,270 | £1,270 |
The £1,270 is a balance you must hold, not a fee. You do not need it if the employer certifies on the certificate that it will cover that amount for your first month. Add your own costs on top. You need B2 English, and Nigeria is not on the exempt list, so an approved English test is the usual proof. Nigeria is also on the list of countries that need a tuberculosis (TB) test, a chest X-ray at an approved clinic. Prices for both depend on the provider, so I have not put a figure on them.
The £3,924 total is about 1.4 months of take-home pay at £41,700. The reduced £628 visa fee is for Immigration Salary List jobs, and mechanics are not on that list.
6. Why the numbers come with a deadline
Since 22 July 2025, most new Skilled Worker jobs must be at degree level. Mechanics are below that, so they can only get sponsorship through the Temporary Shortage List. Under the rule in force on 4 November 2026, that list covers only Certificates of Sponsorship issued before 31 December 2026.
On 23 July 2026 the Migration Advisory Committee recommended no list access for mechanics from 2027, in its shortage list report. That is advice, not law. I found no government decision as of 4 November 2026. So the end of mechanic sponsorship after 2026 is expected, not announced. For the wider picture, see our list of UK shortage jobs that qualify for sponsorship.
One more number affects your plans. A new overseas mechanic cannot bring a partner or children. The only exception is a child born in the UK.
Timing: The cut-off is tied to the date the Certificate of Sponsorship is issued. You then have 3 months to apply. Whether any transition rule covers people who hold a certificate but apply later is not confirmed.
7. Earned settlement and the salary lines
Under the rules in force today, a Skilled Worker can apply for settlement after 5 years. On 2 November 2026 the government announced “earned settlement” changes. The default becomes 10 years. A 5-year path needs pay of £50,271 or more in 3 of the last 5 years, and a 3-year path needs £125,141 or more. The default needs B2 English, the Life in the UK test, no criminal record and no unpaid government debt.
The start date is not stated in the sources, and the Immigration Rules still have to be changed. A mechanic on £41,700 would not reach £50,271, so by my reading of the published rules the 10-year path would apply. That is an illustration, not a promise. The government’s earned settlement page has the full response.
8. Scam check: money you should never pay
A legitimate employer does not ask a worker to pay to secure a visa, and UK Visas and Immigration never guarantees a job. Employers cannot pass the licence fee, the certificate fee or the skills charge on to the worker.
On 23 July 2026 the Insolvency Service reported the winding-up of a fake care recruiter that took upfront fees of up to £1,199 and never filed a visa application. Workers from Nigeria, Pakistan and the Philippines lost over £19,000.
Warning signs: a job you never applied for, a “guaranteed” visa, pay that looks too high for no experience, payment to a personal bank account, pressure to hurry, and a free email address for the “employer”.
Check the employer on the official register of licensed sponsors. The file on 4 November 2026 had 143,070 entries. A listing proves a licence exists, not that a particular job or certificate is real. Match the licence number on your certificate to the register. For a personal case, read our guide to choosing an immigration solicitor.
9. Practical next steps
- Ask any employer in writing for basic annual pay, hours, overtime rate and bonus rules.
- Find the employer on the licence register and keep the certificate’s licence number.
- Check that basic pay meets £41,700 (or £33,400 as a new entrant), count the full cost above, and decide whether 31 December 2026 is workable.
Other routes are narrow. Nigeria is not on the Youth Mobility Scheme list. The High Potential Individual visa is for graduates of listed overseas universities within the last 5 years, and it is not a mechanic route.
Not legal advice: This article is general information as of 4 November 2026. Rules change. For your own case, check the gov.uk Skilled Worker pages and talk to an adviser regulated by the OISC or the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
10. FAQ
Is £48,000 the minimum salary for a mechanic visa?
No. No visa rule sets £48,000 for mechanics. The legal floor for a new hire is £41,700, or £33,400 for a new entrant. £48,000 is an employer’s offer, if it is offered at all.
How much cash do I need before applying from Nigeria?
For a 3-year certificate, £3,924 in government fees plus £1,270 in funds, which is £5,194, unless the employer certifies it will cover the funds. For a 5-year certificate it is £6,793 plus £1,270, which is £8,063. English and TB test costs are extra.
Can I bring my wife and children?
Not as a new overseas mechanic. Partners and children are barred for new medium-skilled hires, except a child born in the UK.
How long does the visa decision take?
The standard time for applications from outside the UK is 3 weeks (gov.uk page updated 9 September 2026). It can take longer if documents need checking.
Will I get settlement after 5 years?
The 5-year rule applies today. The government announced a 10-year default on 2 November 2026, with 5 years only at £50,271 or more. The start date is not confirmed, so check the official page before you plan around either number.
